Phase Out – Reduction of HFC refrigerants until phase-out
Percentage share of the base value (2015)
Following the FCKW ban, the refrigeration industry faces new challenges. The EU F-Gas Regulation (EU) 2024/573 further tightens the gradual phase-out of HFCs. The goal is to reduce the available quantities of HFCs to zero by 2050 (phase-out). The GWP describes the greenhouse effect of a refrigerant compared to CO₂. For example, R134a has a GWP of 1,430, which means that 1 kg of the refrigerant corresponds to a greenhouse effect of 1,430 kg CO₂. The so-called phase-down regulates the gradual reduction of the available quantities of HFCs. Refrigerants with a high GWP are increasingly restricted, while low-GWP and halogen-free refrigerants such as CO₂, propane, and ammonia are gaining in importance. Therefore, a timely transition is recommended.
HFCs/HFOs/Blends
R32 (difluoromethane) is a refrigerant with a GWP of 675. It is a highly combustible gas that is liquefied under pressure.
Classification according to ASHRAE: A2L.

- Industrial air conditioning

R134a (tetrafluoroethane) is a refrigerant with a GWP of 1,430. It is a non-combustible gas that is liquefied under pressure.
Classification according to ASHRAE: A1.

- Air conditioning

R404A is a refrigerant mixture made up of R-125, R-134a and R-143a with a GWP of 3,922. It is a non-combustible gas that is liquefied under pressure.
Classification according to ASHRAE: A1.

- Frozen cargo

R407C is a refrigerant mixture made up of the components R32 (difluoromethane), R125 (pentafluoroethane) and R134a (1,1,1,2-tetrafluoroethane) with a GWP of 1,774. It is a non-combustible gas that is liquefied under pressure.
Classification according to ASHRAE: A1.

- Air conditioning systems in residential and commercial buildings
- Heat pumps in residential and commercial buildings

R410A is a refrigerant mixture made up of the components R32 (difluoromethane) and R125 (pentafluoroethane) with a GWP of 2,088. It is a non-combustible gas that is liquefied under pressure.

- Air conditioners and heat pumps for domestic and commercial use.

R452A is a refrigerant mixture made up of the components R-1234yf (2,3,3,3-tetrafluoroprop-1-ene), R-125 (pentafluoroethane) and R-32 (difluoromethane) with a GWP of 2,140. It is a non-combustible gas that is liquefied under pressure.
Classification according to ASHRAE: A1.
Typical areas of application:
- Industrial and commercial refrigeration (deep and normal cooling)
- Transport refrigeration

R513A is a refrigerant mixture made up of the components R-1234yf (2,3,3,3-tetrafluoroprop-1-ene) and R-134a (1,1,1,2-tetrafluoroethane) with a GWP of 631. It is a non-combustible gas that is liquefied under pressure.

Halogen-free refrigerants
R717/Ammonia is a halogen-free refrigerant with a GWP of 0. It is a highly flammable, colorless, toxic, intensely pungent-smelling, pressurized liquefied gas.
Classification according to ASHRAE: B2L.
Typical areas of application:
- Industrial and commercial refrigeration (e.g., dairies, breweries, etc.)
Delivery sizes: Rental cylinders with 6.5 kg or 41 kg or rental pressure drums with 500 kg.
R744 / CO2 is a halogen-free refrigerant with a GWP of 1. It is a non-toxic, non-flammable, acid-smelling liquefied gas under pressure.
Typical areas of application:
- Industrial and commercial refrigeration (e.g., in cascade systems with R717 / ammonia)
